One reason that we got into the the cricket concept in the first place, is the because of the sustainability component.
Says you: Yeah… yeah… (eye roll) Sustainability??? What??? Are you guys tree hugging hippies growing crickets???
Well, first, no. Even though we do like trees despite never actually physically hugging them.
Well… says ME: Did you know that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations says that the United States will use 37% of it’s fresh water resources simply for meat production??? That’s almost too large to believe!!! Furthermore, this massive infrastructure will produce 14.5% the green house gases produced in the USA.
I don’t know about you, but for me that is just incredible to think about. This will blow your mind even more. It requires about 25lbs of cattle feed to manufacture one pound of beef. Conversely, only 2lbs of cricket feed are needed manufacture a like amount of proteins coming from crickets.
The environmental footprint is incredible to behold at the micro level. It has been measured that cattle (and its relevant processing) will emit 342 pounds of the global warming gas carbon dioxide into the atmosphere to make 1lbs of protein. 342 pounds of planet warming gas!!! You can go to the EPA’s website and use their fancy online calculator to convert that to something visual. (https://www.epa.gov/energy/greenhouse-gas-equivalencies-calculator)
I did it and it turns out that all that meet eating produces the same about of carbon dioxide that your car would if you drove 380 miles! Boom. Mind blow.
Perhaps equally amazing, cricket processing, will only create about FOUR pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
So, eating crickets keeps the planet cool, tastes good and you get a good bang for your buck! Everything is coming up Mighty Cricket. Yup!
